Consultant in Oral Surgery Information Download document

Changes to the person specification for senior clinical (consultant) posts. Following the consultation process in relation to the “equivalence by experience” route for entry to the ISFE in Oral Surgery, the Deans of the English and Scottish Colleges took the decision this was not to be re-opened. It is appreciated that this presents a difficulty for Oral Surgery in the medium term, whilst they wait for trainees to finish recognised training programmes and complete the ISFE by the conventional route. It is the responsibility of employing authorities to clearly outline in the Person Specification the range of skills and competencies required to meet local service needs. It has been decided that possession of an ISFE be moved from the ‘Essential’ column to the ‘Desirable’ for all Consultant Job Descriptions and it will be the responsibility of the applicant to demonstrate how they meet the requirements for the post. The person specifications on the RCS (Eng) website have been updated accordingly.

Drug Prescribing for Dentistry View online

The third edition of the popular Drug Prescribing For Dentistry guidance from the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP) has now been launched. The guidance in aimed at dental practitioners in the primary care sector, and applies to all patients, including adults, children and those with special needs, who would normally be treated in this sector. The guidance is presented in the same problem-orientated layout as in earlier editions but included more comprehensive information on drug interactions and a bacterial infections management guide. The guidance brings together advice on dental prescribing from the BNF and BNFC and is intended to be used in conjunction with them.

Dementia Guidelines

The Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP(UK)) has made its guidance on the practice of dentistry for patients with dementia available free of charge online.

Dementia-Friendly Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines covers the epidemiology of dementia and a wide range of implications for dental professionals, including patient identification, competence and referrals, communication, consent and capacity, history taking, treatment planning, care delivery, prescribing and site-specific considerations for dental practices, care homes and domiciliary practice.

Developed in conjunction with the British Dental Association and the Alzheimer’s Society, it contains over 50 recommendations for practitioners, categorised using the Faculty’s ‘ABC’ (Aspirational, Basic, Conditional) notation, and was first published in hard copy in October 2017.

Dementia-Friendly Dentistry has now been added to the Standards Online portal, which already includes Clinical Examination and Record-Keeping, Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography and Antimicrobial Prescribing for General Dental Practitioners, and which has received over half a million page views since it launched in 2015. Dental professionals can register free of charge at www.fgdp.org.uk/standards-online, and the publications are also available to buy in hard copy at www.fgdp.org.uk/shop.
