Daniel Thompson

I qualified as a Dental Nurse in 2012 and soon after commenced my NEBDN post qualification in Conscious Sedation. In 2015 I joined the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Outpatient department at NUH and this is where my passion for Oral Surgery was ignited. During my time at NUH, I was also recruited to work in Primary Care IMOS services which led to me being elected on to the East Midlands Oral Surgery MCN as a DCP representative from 2017-2018.

In 2018 I left the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department at NUH to seek career development like many dental nurses, and I was fortunate enough to take up a management position in a specialist dental practice managing Unscheduled Dental Care (Out of Hours) and IMOS. Here I remained clinically active to maintain clinical competency and I was also the Lead Sedation Nurse.

In early 2020, I moved out of the East Midlands and secured a position as the Dental Charge Nurse for the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontic Outpatients at UHDB, managing the clinical and operational aspects of the department. During this time, due to COVID, I was redeployed to Acute Medical Admissions and then a subsequent redeployment to the Hospital Vaccination Hub where I was the clinical supervisor.

Upon restoration of services following COVID, I decided to commence a BA(Hons) Management and Leadership with the support of the trust and my line manager where upon completion I have been awarded Chartered Manager status by the CMI. As part of my degree, I developed a workforce development matrix, providing dental nurses within the trust a clear career progression pathway into leadership and management roles. I also worked with the theatre education team to create a competency package for Maxillofacial Dental Nurses to assist in daycase theatres for patients requiring oral surgery procedures under a general anaesthetic. I was also part of the Staffordshire and Shropshire Oral Surgery MCN. This led to being promoted to Senior Charge Nurse of Head & Neck Outpatients.

In December 2023, I took the next step in my career, and I secured a position at Birmingham Dental Hospital as Matron where I am now responsible for the clinical-operational management of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Theatres, Paediatrics, Orthodontics and Unscheduled Dental Care as well as supporting the School of Dental Nursing. I continue to remain clinically active within IMOS services to maintain my clinical competency.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and travelling.
