At our recent annual conference, Rebecca Ford, Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon at University Hospitals Bristol, presented on the topic of “Keeping our eyes out for Periocular Trauma”. She showed a short video on the lateral canthotomy and cantholysis technique for management of retro-bulbar haemorrhages.

Subsequently, her colleague Samantha Hunt, has published a blog explaining more about this technique on the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) website.

The blog can be accessed here and makes a useful learning resource:

The blog contains a video showing more detail of the technique, tips for recognising this problem and how to manage it safely.

Samantha is an ST6 in Ophthalmology and aims to be an oculoplastic and orbital specialist when she completes her training. She is also undertaking a masters in medical education and is passionate about teaching others and promoting inter-specialty teamwork to optimise care for patients.
