BAOS Northern Ireland Regional Study Day

Aim: 

To provide an update on a wide range of subjects of interest to primary and secondary care oral surgeons and dental nurses in Northern Ireland. Core CPD subjects will be covered.

Objectives:

This course is intended to review safeguarding of vulnerable adults and children. Dental and maxillo-facial radiology (with particular focus on CBCT guidance) and facial pain will be discussed. Interesting clinical cases treated within the last year will be presented. The GDC will review the Dental Complaints service (DCS) and Fitness to Practise (FtP) process. The application of the Quality Improvement tool in primary care will be presented.

Learning content:

  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults and Children: Review current guidance.
  • Oral Medicine: facial pain management.
  • Dental and Maxillo-facial Radiology.
    •    To understand the principles of CBCT
    •    To understand the optimisation of CBCT radiation dose
    •    To understand the optimisation of image quality
    •    To understand the balance between dose and image quality
    •    To be aware of the current applications of CBCT in dentistry and implants
    •    To be able to identify the various legal positions of responsibility relating to the use of CBCT
    •    To be aware of the current training requirements to refer, perform and read a CBCT scan
  • Revision of interesting oral surgery cases: diagnosis and management
  • GDC DCS and FtP
  • Quality Improvement.

This CPD course meets the criteria for the GDC’s development outcomes A, B, C, D.

Speakers Profiles

A variety of speakers will present on safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.

Ms Claire Curran

Dentist with special interest in Oral Surgery

Ms Curran qualified from Glasgow University in 2011. She then spent a number of years working in Scotland and Australia with a specialist interest in oral surgery. Claire gained her Diploma in Oral Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in England in 2019. She joined Mr Curran at Curran Oral Surgery in 2018.

Dr Jimmy Makdissi

Consultant Radiologist

Dr Makdissi joined the Institute of Dentistry, Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, in 2004 as a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. 

He directs the Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology programme of the undergraduate BDS curriculum. He completed his specialist training at Guy’s Hospital and obtained the Diploma of Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists. He has served on the Education Committee of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. He has also served as the Dental Tutor for the London Deanery at Barts Health, the Faculty Tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons and as the President of the Metropolitan Branch of the British Dental Association. 

In addition, he is the founder of the Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Interpretation Masterclass providing UK-based CBCT hands-on training along with a collection of e-learning modules. 

Jimmy is currently doing his PhD on the use of MRI in Dentistry.

Dr Stephen Adair
Consultant Oral Medicine

Dr Adair is a Consultant in Oral Medicine at the Royal Victoria School of Dentistry in Belfast. Having qualified in Dentistry in 2000 (BDS Dundee) and undertaken training posts in Scotland and Northern Ireland he attained dual qualification in Medicine 2008 (MBChB Dundee). 

Following posts in hospital and dental practice he was clinical lead for a final year (5BDS) Dental Outreach Centre in Arbroath. 

Dr Adair entered formal Specialist Training at Liverpool University Dental Hospital (2014) gaining ISFE and CCST in Oral Medicine February 2018.  

Outside Oral Medicine he has interests in Law and Ethics as well as teaching having completed both Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education (PGCert) and Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) examinations.
