CPD with a difference….anyone fancy cycling in Mallorca?
Those of you at the conference in Bristol last week will already know that in 2020 we are offering a slightly different CPD event which involves a trip to Mallorca (think sunshine and warmth), cycling (think smooth roads, no map reading, great cake), and CPD with experts speaking on topics relevant to oral surgery. What’s not to like? And you can sign up even if you don’t want to cycle but do fancy a trip to Mallorca!
Chatting to people at the conference about the trip made me aware that perhaps certain aspects need some further explanation, so here are some of the things I was asked.
When is the trip?
Wednesday 29 April to Sunday 3 May 2020.
Full days cycling on Thursday-Saturday with CPD talks before dinner.
Wednesday and Sunday – guided cycling available depending on your flight times.
What is guided cycling?
We divide ourselves into groups depending on how much of the day you want to be out cycling (and how far/fast you want to go), and then an expert ride leader plans a route and cycles with you. Everything is taken care of so there is no map reading, no getting lost and the guide knows all the best places to stop for coffee/cake/lunch…so you can just enjoy the riding!
The trip is being organised in conjunction with Adam and his team at Mallorca Cycling who have years of experience in this field. Check out their website www.mallorcacycling.co.uk
Who is the trip aimed at?
The intention is to cater for most cycling abilities – you don’t have to be a Bradley Wiggins or Geraint Thomas! As long as you can ride a road bike, you pick the group that will best suit you. You can even hire an electric road bike if you fancy some assistance!
So you choose whether you want a shorter day out on the bike with time for the beach/pool on your return, a full day out at a faster pace tackling long routes, or somewhere between the two! Cycling in Mallorca offers a fantastic mixture of rolling roads and stunning mountain climbs, so there is something for everyone!
If you don’t want to cycle and would prefer to explore Mallorca by hiring a car or just chill at the hotel this is an option and at a discounted rate!
What is the CPD element?
There will be two 40 minute talks held before dinner in a conference room at our hotel. BAOS President Professor Paul Coulthard is planning to talk about implant related topics that will be of interest whether or not you place implants, Dr Suk Ng is a consultant radiologist at Kings who is going to give practical advice on interpreting CBCTs, and Nick Smith is a consultant orthodontist who will talk about orthodontic matters that he wished oral surgeons knew! The lecture topics are currently being finalised and CPD points will be applied for. Talks will be relevant whether you work in primary or secondary care.
Where are we staying?
Puerto Pollensa is in the north east of Mallorca, and we are staying at the 4* Pollensa Park Spa hotel. This has 2 pools, spa, gym, and a secure indoor storage room for bikes, and is very close to the beach as well as shops and bars. We will be staying half board, with a buffet breakfast and dinner.
How do I sign up?
Booking will be available on the BAOS website this week, along with further details and the small print!
At this stage you need to pay a £150 deposit by 3 November 2019 to secure your space, and the balance is due by the end of February 2020.
Do invite your oral surgery and OMFS colleagues that like cycling to join us. You don’t have to be a BAOS member to come.
It’s a new venture for BAOS and CPD, and our first event that could pass as ‘wellbeing’! Please feel free to contact the BAOS office with any queries you might have. I hope you will join us!

Mallorca Cycling will offer free airport transfers to the hotel. However, they want to make sure the transfer minibus is efficiently utilised and will set times for morning and afternoon transfers. The timing of transfers will be finalised once we know which airports delegates are flying from. We will suggest which flights to book so that waiting in Palma airport is minimised.
If you are unable to arrive for these transfers alternative transfer arrangements can be made but may incur additional cost to you.
Mallorca Cycling can accommodate your own bike on the transfer from the airport to the hotel if you are bringing it out but they need to know in advance. There is no additional cost for this.
Mallorca Cycling recommend that you book cycle hire with either https://www.procyclehire.com or https://www.pinarelloexperience.com. You will receive a code to get a 10% discount on bookings with pinarello experience.
Below are examples of how the different groups can be divided:
· Green group, relaxed pace with a couple of coffee stops. Not out all day so you can enjoy the pool/sea and delights of Puerto Pollenca in the afternoon. Distance around 40-50km average speed 12/13mph. (E-bikes are an option for this group only)
· Amber group, longer rides at a steady pace, for riders who enjoy a good day out in the saddle covering 100km at a consisant pace of 15-17mph. Ideally have some experience of pack riding (not essential) and are able to tackle some climbs.
· Red group, quicker rides at a higher tempo and have ridden in pack before. Able to sustain long days in the saddle. Riding distance will be approx 120-130km at an average speed of 18mph.
